Seconds Eyebright 84/12 Vase

New Zealand’s Eyebright flowers swoop down from the neck of this design like myriad white flying saucers holding purple-veins. In this way, and set against a midnight-blue background, the two-lipped corolla, its lower, tube-like portion being enclosed in a green calyx, tipped with four teeth, holds an extra-terrestrial aura. The exciting form does not stop there, the upper lip is two-lobed and arches over the stamens forming a shelter-like structure and if that is not enough, the lower lip is spreading and three-lobed, each lobe being notched. Nicola’s eye observed more, and ignites the design with the flower’s yellow, dwarf star-like streaks of colour, which emphasize the central lobe and purple 'honey guides' on both upper and lower lips, before disappearing to create a New Zealand odyssey.

What is a Moorcroft second? All our art pottery is closely inspected before it leaves the Moorcroft factory and the selection process is as rigorous as any in the world. As a result, not all pieces emerge unblemished in their quality assessment. The fault or faults may be in the finish of a piece, whether it be a tiny tubeline miss, an incorrectly painted petal, or a small glaze run. Seconds are not ‘red-dotted’, all of them are far too good for that, and each seconds piece has a charm and individuality of its own. Any fault is not structural and the piece can still be used for the purpose it was made.
