The Carpet Garden 162/8 Vase

Vicky was inspired to create a colourful design duo when she saw a beautiful show garden at the 2001 RHS Chelsea Flower Show and discovered that the idea had come from a sketch drawn by King Charles himself (at that time then The Prince of Wales) and submitted to the Royal Horticultural Society. The garden was a triumph drawing huge crowds and winning both a coveted Silver-Gilt medal from the RHS and Vicky’s admiration.

The original sketch was based on a Turkish carpet in one of the rooms of His Royal Highness’ private residence - Highgrove House and Gardens in Gloucestershire. “After gazing for many years at the patterns and colours of one of the small Turkish carpets in my room at Highgrove, I couldn’t help feeling what fun it would be to use those patterns and colours to create a theme for a garden. The challenge would be to see if you could almost create the effect of being within the carpet.” – King Charles

This story took Vicky on a journey of discovery as she looked further into the detailed and complex rug designs of Anatolia - a rich and vibrant part of the world. Vicky wanted her designs to focus mainly on plant life and so she catalogued the flowers and plants see had seen in the Chelsea Flower Show garden and discovered whether they were repeated in the Highgrove Turkish carpet. There were many crossovers and these formed the basis of her design created to celebrate her 25th anniversary at Moorcroft.

Vicky chose a new shaped vase to recreate some of the softer tones she saw within the show garden. The stylised flowers, carnations, hyacinths and tulips, repeat themselves around the vase in a moving carousel of colour. Soft pinks, corals and purples are set against a dramatic black background at the lower part of the vase which fades out to colours of pale blue and green as your eye moves upwards to the fluted neck of the vase. The overall effect is a vibrant and complex design that tests both Moorcroft’s most skilled tubeliners and painters alike.
