What a sight the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty must have been as they greeted migrants landing at New York harbour almost a hundred years ago. Millions of people from all walks of life, races and ethnicities chose the long and toiling path across the Atlantic to flee poverty and oppression in order to pursue the American dream. Each new arrival would have been hoping to make something of their lives, seeking that one chance to prosper in the land of opportunity.
In his design, Coming to America, Paul is attempting to recreate the scene as those hardy migrants may have seen it, looking out across the bay from the many passenger boats jostling for position amongst the tugs, working boats and cruise liners. The faces of anonymous drifters, eager and enthused to start their new lives, look outward, as we do, in awe of the new territory and that daunting skyline.
