Nicola Slaney takes us on a journey to Japan, capturing the country’s rich heritage and timeless beauty through her distinctive design style. With a keen eye for detail and a passion for evoking the spirit of the places she visits, Nicola draws upon traditional Japanese motifs including graceful cranes and mystical koi carp.

She transports us to the iconic Mount Fuji, with its instantly recognisable silhouette, while celebrating elegant blossoms and the delicate natural forms found within Japan’s flora and fauna. Together, these elements create a harmonious collection inspired by the country’s enduring connection to nature, symbolism, and artistic tradition.

Kansai

The Kansai region is regarded as the cultural and historical heartland of Japan. In Japanese tradition, koi carp symbolise perseverance, strength, courage, and prosperity. Because of their ability to swim upstream and leap over waterfalls, they are seen as emblems of determination and the pursuit of ambitious goals, qualities long associated with the Samurai spirit. Koi also represent good fortune, success, and personal transformation.

The cranes depicted at the top of the vase symbolize longevity and good fortune. According to Japanese legend, cranes are believed to live for a thousand years, making them enduring symbols of long life, happiness, and luck.

The vase is further adorned with irises, flowing water foliage, and delicate floral motifs, including wisteria cascading around the upper section, all of which enhance its rich symbolism and natural elegance.
