Bearded Tits PLQ8 Plaque

Limited Edition
Plaque

The bearded tit - one of the UK's rarest breeding birds - has continued to bounce back from a population crash. Bearded tits are very sensitive to cold hard winters and this can have a knock-on effect on their breeding success. Their numbers are increasing due to the work the RSPB are doing to improve and create more habitat for them across their nature reserves. The charity’s hard work will allow bearded tit numbers to continue to grow into a more stable population.

At RSPB Leighton Moss they have around 25 pairs of bearded tits that can be seen all year round. There you can discover the birds dancing and diving about the reedbeds on a crisp winter's morning. These charismatic birds can also be found dining on gravel from the reserve’s pathways, rather than indulging in seeds or insects.

Named after their similarities with long-tailed tits and the dark facial markings on the males that resemble a moustache, bearded tits make their homes on well-managed reedbeds. The historic loss of this wetland habitat across the UK has resulted in the population becoming fragmented but thanks to sites such as Leighton Moss, which boasts of having the largest reed bed in the North West of England, the future looks bright for these charming birds.
