Spirit of Kent JU3 Jug

The Dykes Medal is the supreme award of the British Iris Society and is awarded to the most outstanding cultivar in the Dykes Trial that is of a sufficiently high standard. For 2021, the medal was awarded to Olga Wells, a past editor of the British Iris Society Year Book, for her iris Spirit of Kent. With colouring reminiscent of a Turner oil painting, burnt copper coloured flowers, holding slight flecks of gold around edges of falls, soar up the verticals of this Moorcroft jug as if reflecting the standards like sunset on water, as they drift under the blazing orange beards of a setting sun. Technically brilliant fusions of colour also flow in a haze of natural ultramarine within the leaves of Spirit of Kent as they tumble and fall like crashing waves as if in an audacious and technically perfect, Turner’s masterpiece.
