Parasol Dance (2006) saw Kerry surpassing, through sheer design sophistication and colour arousal, anything ever achieved before in Moorcroft’s illustrious history in the fungi design category, made famous by William Moorcroft himself. Utilising the shape of Sonoyta, her first limited edition, Kerry harnesses mycorrhizal fungi to allow us to return to the freedom of childhood, the time when we first catch sight of those spotty red and white toadstools in fairy stories and other children’s book illustrations, such as Alice in Wonderland. Kerry too, takes you on a journey, where toadstools appear to grow into the landscape of trees themselves and a surreal blue-green haze lures us into the composition. This all makes sense, Woodland Sanctuary offers an antithesis to the town, the boundary of civilisation – a wild place for refuge of the soul in the natural world, a place for poets, freethinkers and of course, elves and fairies.
