Kelmscott Manor PLQ8 Plaque

Limited Edition
Plaque

Kelmscott Manor was the inspirational Cotswold retreat of William Morris, his family, friends and colleagues. When Morris first saw the Manor in 1871, he was so delighted by this 'loveliest haunt of ancient peace', he signed a joint lease for the property with his friend and colleague Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the Pre-Raphaelite artist.

'I have been enjoying the garden much: one walks about and about there is no eyesore: all is beautiful.' (William Morris, 1896)

Morris loved the house as a work of true craftsmanship, in harmony with the village and the surrounding countryside. He considered it so natural in its setting as to be almost organic, it looked to him as if it had ‘grown up out of the soil’; and with ‘quaint garrets amongst great timbers of the roof where of old times the tillers and herdsmen slept’. Its beautiful gardens, with barns, dovecote, a meadow and stream, provided a constant source of inspiration for Morris.

Helen’s design offers a tantalising vision of Kelmscott Manor. Green garden foliage and limestone brickwork give a lasting impression of somewhere peaceful, unspoilt and harmonious.
