Riggendale Eagles 46/12 Vase

The golden eagle is one of the top predators in the Scottish countryside; it is an enormous bird of prey that mainly hunts rabbits and mountain hares but will also catch foxes, young deer and large birds like grouse. Golden eagles are mainly found in the upland areas and remote glens in the north and west of Scotland. However, since the 1950’s, golden eagles have been known to make their large home territories at Haweswater in the Lake District, nesting on rocky cliff faces and in trees, building giant nests or ‘eyries’. These nests are often used by successive generations to rear their own young. Since 2001, one male golden eagle in particular has made his presence, and his quest for a partner, known to ramblers in the area. Despite its annual efforts the bird, said to be nicknamed Eddy by local residents, has failed to lure a female companion - hindered by the fact it resides about 40 miles south of the border with Scotland, where the nearest other golden eagles live. Alas, we can live in hope, and so does Helen Dale who has featured a pair in flight over Riggendale. Helen manages to capture the impressive wingspan and wisened faces of the golden eagles, who’s piercing eyes glare knowingly over the terrain.
