To be surrounded or even enveloped by pure silence is one of the finest experiences known to man, and yet there are few who would complain if the silence was broken, softly and gently, by the song of birds. To be close to heaven would be to hear a nightingale sing on a calm, warm summer’s evening.
Birds fascinate us all. A walk down a country lane in the early morning introduces the listener to the sounds of competitive and territorial singing birds as they patrol their hedgerow or bushes in a burst of song. From time immemorial, we have called this miracle of nature ‘the dawn chorus’. It is not that the sounds are synchronised in any way. They are not, but the overall impression coming from leaves and branches, is one of industry, happiness and a firm assertion of ‘home’. Designer, Kerry Goodwin, has ears that pick out the songs of birds and as those sounds swirl around in her head, misty pictures start to take shape in her mind. That is what distinguishes a designer from the rest of us, but the fruit of her labour is for everyone to enjoy.
Dawn Chorus draws three familiar birds from their hedgerow home. A contented black bird nestles comfortably as she sings while a lively great tit serenades his heart out to attract a mate. Quite separately, a territorial robin trills evidence of its presence to foes who might fear and friends who might join him. Dawn Chorus is ceramic art at its best and comes as a limited edition of 30.
This year, national Dawn Chorus day falls on Sunday 6th May. Moorcroft is in bird mode and introduces its new cuddly blackbird, a noisy great tit and our legendary robin red-breast himself. All of them come on the classic 7/7 shape.
