Silent by day and a hunter by night, the Great Horned Owl is very much a family-orientated bird. This may be because the female is appreciably larger than the male or simply because the odds of a good, nutritious meal shorten considerably if there are two birds working their territory for food. One of Vicky Lovatt’s prestige owls is watchful and alert. A large silver moon is rising behind the trees and the time has arrived to hunt and feed its young. The owl’s mate stares straight ahead. Something has stirred in the undergrowth beneath the trees. It might be prey or it might be foe. The owl’s stare is fierce, continuous and silent.
Horned owls are heavily and vigorously protected across the American continent – north and south. With territories ranging from the wind-blasted chills of the Yukon and Alaska to the humid dampness of the Amazon rainforest., the ancient feathered raptors have no boundaries. Their screeches, whistles and hoots can be heard almost anywhere, from the forests of Virginia and suburban New York to the mountains of Peru and The Rockies of Canada. The horned owl is no ordinary bird. Like the 18/16 vase designed by Vicky Lovatt, it commands the attention of all who enter its territory.
Its talons are awesome, fighting weapons to protect its mate for life and to provide food for its young. Images of birds of this calibre were never introduced by William or Walter Moorcroft for the reason Walter himself once offered “neither of us knew how to draw them”. Designs of this calibre and of this subject matter, are relatively new and yes, one day they will be rare for that reason alone.
