Announcing the arrival of a new collection of 12 monthly miniatures by designer Nicola Slaney. This fascinating series gives a glimpse of life in Britain’s hedgerows through her eyes, each captured in the palm of your hand.
British hedgerows offer a habitat and vital food source to a range of fascinating creatures and fruitful foraging for people too. Hedgerows have been part of the British landscape for thousands of years and many of our most ancient examples date from Saxon times. Most were planted between 1650 and 1850 when hundreds of thousands of miles of hedges were created and this is the basis of the familiar patchwork of c.500,000 km of hedgerow that we still see today. Hedgerows often have a wide variety of trees, shrubs and flowers within them, offering food in the form of leaves, flower nectar, berries and nuts as well as nesting and burrowing sites and safe havens from danger for small animals. Hedgerows also help to link habitats across farmland that might otherwise offer little protection for wildlife. Sadly, Britain has lost half its hedgerows since World War II but designer Nicola Slaney is championing those that remain, and the wildlife and plants that can be discovered within them.
