Arundina 95/10 Vase

Limited Edition

From 1918 onwards, William Moorcroft drew a dramatic range of designs which featured irises, narcissi, orchids and other flowers drawn in a naturalistic style over the surface of the pots, often on dark grounds. Some of these designs were inspired by his father, Thomas Moorcroft’s botanical drawings. One such drawing was a watercolour by Thomas of orchids, probably drawn at Trentham by permission of the Duke of Sutherland. For this, he received a Silver Medal in 1875, from the Department of Art and Science’s national competition.

Moorcroft’s 1919 bottle oven had been added to the 1913 factory, and the pieces to emerge from it included the superb Orchid vase on a dark ground inspired by William’s father’s drawings.

The story of the 100-year-old vase and the early days of the 1919 bottle oven that created it, inspired Nicola to design her own contemporary orchid vase, Arundina. She carefully selected the tropical bamboo orchid, found from India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Thailand to China, to name but a few countries. To recreate the colour palette of 1919, Nicola selected a celadon coloured clay and painted her watercolour in shades of wine, blue and green. The open orchid flowerheads intermingle between the upright bamboo canes.

It was pieces such as these dating back 100 years that took Moorcroft’s art pottery from strength to strength and which lead Alwyn Lasenby from Liberty & Co. in London, (Moorcroft’s major shareholders) to write, on the 11th September 1919:
“We enclose a copy of the Balance Sheet and Profit and Loss Account…you are again to be congratulated on the year’s trading.”
The addition of the third bottle oven in 1919 had proven to be a sound decision by William, and little did he know at the time that 100 years later, it would still be gracing Burslem’s skyline.
