Clifftop Meadow 102/3 Vase

It would be easy to confuse the six-spot burnet for a butterfly as it zooms around during the day, but this brightly coloured insect is actually a moth. It is fairly widespread, though more coastal in the northerly parts of the UK, and they are a common sight in cliff-top habitats like Bempton. The moth’s curious thinly-scaled, grey-blue forewings contrast with 5 or 6 ruby-red spots and black body. Seated under a fanned sunburst motif of deep-pink milk thistle discs, this burnet moth is surrounded by stylised green bracts drawn with sweeping curves reminiscent of the Art Deco tradition.
