Complex and intriguing, The Arches is the latest thought-provoking townscape brought to us by the creator of designs hallowed for their cultural-significance, such as Back to Backs, Coming to America and Times Gone By, Paul Hilditch. Paul professes to be a northern lad himself having grown up in The Potteries and worked as a figure painter for Royal Doulton in its heyday. He is no stranger, therefore, to the customs of a busy industrial city with its terraced houses, variety of transportation systems and the all-important ales houses scattered here and there for good measure. Through the arches of a viaduct, Paul transports us to a vision now only found in books and living memory, of red-brick architecture, bustling mills and factories and busy canal systems. As ever, it is the fine detail within Paul’s designs which really enrich the plot; housewives hanging out the washing, adverts for soap, tea and cigarettes plastered on the street corner, dusty old pigeons tucked into every available crevice. It’s the story of The Arches and it’s part of Northern England’s fascinating historical tapestry.
