Seconds Iffley Meadow 138/12 Vase

An elegant and extraordinary popular Moorcroft shape for several decades, Emma had no hesitation in using it for a new Meadow Collection. The chosen flower was the almost magical Snakeshead Fritillary, a firm favourite with Moorcroft connoisseurs throughout the past three decades. There was no doubt a marriage between a favourite shape and a favourite flower had to be something very special. Welcome Iffley Meadow. By the early 1980s, the Snakeshead Fritillary had become extremely rare, and in Iffley Meadow, numbers had fallen to a mere 500. It was the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust which decided that the time had come to act. In 1983, the Trust acquired Iffley Meadow and the rest is history. Today, the meadow boasts of more than 42,000 Snakeshead Fritillaries, and in April and May, they come into full bloom, their drooping, chequered heather-coloured flowers spread out like a heavenly carpet. Emma’s gloriously regal image does full justice to the sheer beauty of the Snakeshead Fritillary.

What is a Moorcroft second?
All our art pottery is closely inspected before it leaves the Moorcroft factory and the selection process is as rigorous as any in the world. As a result, not all pieces emerge unblemished in their quality assessment. The fault or faults may be in the finish of a piece, whether it be a tiny tubeline miss, an incorrectly painted petal, or a small glaze run. Seconds are not ‘red-dotted’, all of them are far too good for that, and each seconds piece has a charm and individuality of its own. Any fault is not structural and the piece can still be used for the purpose it was made.
