seconds The Golden Age of Steam PLQ23 Plaque

Limited Edition

A wonder of Victorian Gothic Architecture and one of the most elegant stations in the world, St. Pancras Railway Station opened 150 years ago in 1868 to connect London with England’s major cities. The station design was a unique response to its geographic context but also reflected station design and operation of the day; the platform deck was raised up on a grid of cast-iron columns in order to allow steam engines to pass over the Regent’s canal just to the north. The space underneath, now called the Arcade, was designed and used to store beer. The roof was made up of a series of wrought iron ribs holding up the largest single spanned roof in the world when first built. Its design was copied across the world, including at Grand Central Station in New York.

Paul’s ceramic plaque takes us back to the golden age of steam where glistening glass ceilings and freshly painted iron beams canopy over a burgundy steam train. Ladies in their fine attire and gentlemen in top hats emphasise the luxuries of the middle classes. The interaction between different characters, along with the colour and attention to detail, encapsulate everything that is appealing about designs crafted at Moorcroft today. The Golden Age of Steam also captures an idealistic vision of Victorian Britain, where power, progress and change gripped the growing Empire, whilst elegance, finesse and pride still prevailed in the metropolis.

What is a Moorcroft second? All our art pottery is closely inspected before it leaves the Moorcroft factory and the selection process is as rigorous as any in the world. As a result, not all pieces emerge unblemished in their quality assessment. The fault or faults may be in the finish of a piece, whether it be a tiny tubeline miss, an incorrectly painted petal, or a small glaze run. Seconds are not ‘red-dotted’, all of them are far too good for that, and each seconds piece has a charm and individuality of its own. Any fault is not structural and the piece can still be used for the purpose it was made.
