Seconds Blue Jay JU7 Jug

Across the world, enthusiasts will find multiple examples of jays. Even in the UK, we have a variety all of our own with colourful plumage, a strong presence and a reputation of being profoundly clever. More significantly, our jays have much in common with their American cousins. The American birds are territorial, brave in protecting their own families, and above all they are beautiful almost beyond belief.
Along the Blue Ridge Parkway, from Virginia to North Carolina, blue jays were plentiful - a fact not lost on designer, Nicola Slaney. Blue had always been a favoured colour and the screams of excitement whenever one or other of her daughters spotted a blue jay, was a personal delight. After a while, however, the family tired of the raucous noise and only erupted once more if a flock of the colourful blue birds spluttered and squawked their way upwards from the trees which lined the Blue Ridge Parkway.
It was impossible, of course, to bring some of the abundant blue jays home with her, but it was possible to bring them back to the UK in her sketchbook. After all, they had captured her imagination with colour, courage and family strength, the qualities in life she so admired. It was, Nicky decided, that the three qualities she had noticed most of all in the blue jay, should be represented in her family home. It was a thought which pleased her.
What is a Moorcroft second?
All our art pottery is closely inspected before it leaves the Moorcroft factory and the selection process is as rigorous as any in the world. As a result, not all pieces emerge unblemished in their quality assessment. The fault or faults may be in the finish of a piece, whether it be a tiny tubeline miss, an incorrectly painted petal, or a small glaze run. Seconds are not ‘red-dotted’, all of them are far too good for that, and each seconds piece has a charm and individuality of its own. Any fault is not structural and the piece can still be used for the purpose it was made.
