HMS Endeavour, also known as HM Bark Endeavour, was a British Royal Navy research vessel that Lieutenant James Cook commanded to Australia and New Zealand on his first voyage of discovery from 1768 to 1771. She was launched in 1764 as the collier Earl of Pembroke, and the navy purchased her in 1768 for a scientific mission to the Pacific Ocean to explore the seas for the surmised Terra Australis Incognita or ‘unknown southern land’. Paul’s design features HMS Endeavor in her heyday, bobbing amongst the wild Yorkshire waves which in turn, lash against the coastal cliffs. In 2018, a replica of the ship arrived in Whitby to form part of a new tourist attraction. The full-scale copy of Endeavour was towed 40 miles by sea from Middlesbrough. Now transformed into a floating museum, to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Cook's first expedition to the Pacific. Visitors are welcome to step aboard HM Bark Endeavour and dive into her rich history as a discovery vessel on the high seas.
